Blackfeet have our own versions of the traumatic history that we collectively still feel. And it's just an ethos in my people that if you're dealing with trauma, it needs a counterbalance.
Things move at their own pace.
In small-town America, you have to know somebody who loves film or recommends things to you, or you have to be really driven to it. You don't see it on the marquee of your local art house theater while you're walking to get your coffee in the morning.
For me at 16 and 17 years old, I wasn't even playing for the academy teams. I hardly played in the starting XI for the Under 19s.

I stumbled weirdly into law enforcement. My university had a program where you're basically a security guard and they send you to police academy. I did that because they pitched it as free room and board.
I know the Academy Awards are all about the art, and love, of movie making. But I have to say, my favorite part is the dresses!
The first thing that we did when we moved out to Seattle was enroll me in Stone Soup Theatre. That kind of led into doing some student films. There was a graduate student at University of Washington whose senior thesis film I did when I was a senior in high school and some student films at Shoreline Community College where my mom taught.
