Because I understand the Constitution, I understand democratic ideals and our parliamentary system, it's an easy transition to then say 'OK, what are the principles that tie into these ideals?' and that's basically how I approach my policy.
One-size-fits-all response to a health crisis doesn't even work across Canada, let alone the entire globe.
I don't hide who I am as a person who believes in the sanctity of life, and I don't hide my views on abortion, but as a policy-maker, my goal is to find things that unite us and that we can agree on.
I did protection work with dogs. I trained dogs how to protect their handlers and owners. We'd teach them bite work, how to search buildings and deal with gunfire and stuff like that. Sometimes I'd be the 'bad guy' that dogs would attack in training.
This experience actually means the very opposite: the largest military power was unable to stop such a sensitive attack and will be unable to rule out such a possibility in the future. Precisely this is the background to the United States' military interventions.
The scientists who attack mainstream religion, rather than striving for peaceful coexistence with it, damage science, and also weaken the fight against fundamentalism.
We can just keep doing it the way we're doing it. We can attack everybody for small-minded things and crush everybody with a new idea. And where are we going to be? Where we are now - behind. Or we can embrace new things and try to be positive and let everybody play a role.
I believe that the Conservative Party should remain the last big-tent party, where people are free to hold divergent beliefs that are entrenched in our democracy and our fundamental freedoms.
