The first time I heard a professional jazz quartet practicing in a house down the street it was almost like an out-of-body experience.

If you get the basics right, you can freshen things up, you don't want to just regurgitate the past. But we gotta stay true to our historic selves.

At an early age, I understood music... the rhyme schemes, melodies and harmonies.

For me, it's always been about doing different things... If you're still jazzed about the possibilities, the chances of you coming up with stuff that has flavor is more conceivable. It keeps you going. Like working with the younger artists. It reminded us of who we are. Sometimes you need that.

My favorite type of music to sing to would be rock and roll, Tenacious D, Led Zeppelin, some Queen - I love all of them. I love singing to them because they're all just great voices. I love listening to very obscure jazz.

If you play jazz, then you play with your fingers. If you're playing rock, you use a pick. There's really no rhyme or reason to that other than that's just the way it has been.

You know, it's funny... when you're making money, people don't think you're playing jazz. Now when you're not making money, people think that you're a good jazz musician.

Jazz was uplifted by what I did.
